Mac OS 9.2.2 (Mac mini G4)

$

Mac OS 9.2.2 installed and running on a Mac mini G4
Application file:

A bootable install CD of Mac OS 9.2.2 for the Mac mini G4 - This set uses the Mac OS 9.2.2 Universal install CD as the base installer mechanism. Unlike the similar "Mac OS 9.2.2 for Mac mini G4 (v9.0) CD" which uses a version of a Mac OS 9.2.2 Restore disk image as a base for its install set.

My resolve for creating this CD-ROM is because OpenGL did not work for me with the Mac OS 9.2.2 for Mac mini G4 v9.0 CD here, that originated from Mac OS9 Lives.

Compatibility:
  • Notes:
    • There are two versions of Drive Setup included in the CD's Utilities folder; v1.9.2 and v2.0.7 (the latter without a version number in its file name). Drive Setup v1.9.2 is the utility you must use if you want to format FireWire disks, newer versions of Drive Setup cannot format FW drives. Drive Setup 2.0.7 is the better choice to use if you intend to reformat Mac mini's internal HD.

    • Sound is only available via the audio output jack. That is, the Sound Control Panel does not work (no System beeps). You will need to use external headphones or speakers for audio playback plugged into the jack.

    • USB will only operate at (very slow) v1.1 speed.

    • This install CD is (mostly) exactly what you get if you install the Universal Mac OS 9.2.2 disk. So there are no frills, you will need to add your own apps and nice touches to improve what's here. For example, QuickTime 5 and CarbonLib 1.5 are installed and you will likely want to update those (or not).

These are images of the original installation discs that came with my Colour Classic II.

Unfortunately, I do not possess the ability to edit Japanese text, so the file names are just the MD5 sums of the content of the image. If someone with that ability has the time to rename these files correctly, that would be a service to archival Smile.

The first download is a ZIP file of raw disc images.

Mac OS X NetInstall Images and Software Updates

The goal for this page:
List NetInstall images from OS 9 - 10.8 Mountain Lion along with the software updates for each of those OS.
Or as new as I can go without getting the site in trouble. Lion and Mountain Lion are free downloads now so I assume those are free game.
Images will be in Stuffit (.sit or .sitx) or Disk Image (.dmg) format for the best compatibility on systems to open them. Between Stuffit, Disk Utility and The Unarchiver, these files should be able to open on any system that would need the files.

MountX - Mount old Linux ext2 filesystems

$

MountX is a GPL-licensed system extension which provides read-only access to ext2-formatted filesystems, under MacOS 8 & 9

This software is based on e2fsprogs version 1.14, it was written by Benjamin Herrenschmidt, the original author of BootX, a well known Linux bootloader, for PowerPC Macs with "Old World" ROMs

From the README:

"What is MountX ?
----------------

MountX allows your macintosh to mount MkLinux & linux-pmac ext2fs volumes on
the MacOS desktop. It does it's magic by implementing an external file system

Compatibility:

MountX does it's magic by implementing an external file system
following Apple's File System Manager API. The File System Manager is always
available with system 7.5 and later. Therefore, this extension may not work at all with System 7.0-7.1.2

Attempting to load this extension under System 7.6.1, running under Basilisk, fails with the message "Your system software is too old for MountX. You must be running MacOS 8 minimum, sorry"

Mac OS X Sorbet Leopard offers a significant jump in speed and security over the original Leopard by employing advanced methods of performance optimization and system streamlining, the end result of which directly rivals the user-facing improvements seen in Snow Leopard on Intel platforms.

As an esteemed user of Sorbet Leopard (10.5.9), here's what you can expect during day-to-day usage ...

o Faster startup times, application launch times, and network performance

o Smoother and more fluid UI animations and interactions

Compatibility:

A PowerPC G4 (7400) processor or better

512 MB SDRAM or better

A 20 GB Apple Partition Map-formatted partition or larger

A Core Image-supported video card is strongly recommended

A USB 2.0 interface is strongly recommended

Application interface
Application file:

BootX allows you to boot the Linux kernel on Old World PowerPC Macs, including NuBus-based systems. It will not work on New World Macs (i.e. iMac G3, Power Macintosh G3 Blue and White, and later).

This download includes the application, system extension, source code, and other information, but not any kernels to boot from.

Some important notes:

  • Mac OS must be installed; BootX cannot boot the kernel without Mac OS
  • Files must be on an HFS filesystem (not HFS+)
  • Requires an uncompressed or coff-compressed kernel
Compatibility:

Requires an Old World PowerPC Macintosh, and Classic Mac OS installed on an HFS (not HFS+) filesystem

GomTalk allows you to combine the Japanese parts of KanjiTalk 6.0.7 (or 6.0.7.1) with US System 7 (or 7.0.1), giving you a Kanji System 7. It works great.

This package contains Japanese language instructions, see the GomTalk_Manuals for English documentation (for version 1.2.1, though). Also see the Japanese_Fonts file for additional very useful fonts.

#1: version 1.2.1 [from HyperLib VOL3 FD1]

Compatibility:

The Kanji System 7 itself requires about 7.5 megabytes of disk and almost 2 megabytes of RAM, so you'll need more than 2 megs RAM.

It works with Kanji Truetype and A/UX.
GomTalk is also compatible with Adobe Kanji Type Manager (ATM-J)
